Princess Eugenie wary of ‘causing instant trouble’ with Meghan Markle move
Princess Eugenie has avoided following Meghan Markle on Instagram despite the pair having a close relationship, a royal commentator exclusively told GB News.
The Duchess of Sussex made a surprise return to the social media platform on New Year’s Day with a video of herself running barefoot towards the waves on a Californian beach and carving 2025 in the sand.
This message likely teased the former actress’s latest Netflix project, which she announced on the account the following day.
Despite Meghan’s high-profile return to social media, it appears that the account has yet to be followed by any members of the Royal Family.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams explained that the Royal Family would refrain from following the duchess as they “know it would cause instant trouble”.
Fitzwilliams told GB News: “The Royal Family wouldn’t touch them officially in that regard, but Eugenie is friendly with them and also has the Portugal connection.
“That could develop but more conventionally.
“I would be very surprised if Eugenie liked or was openly supportive.
He added: “That would instantly cause comment that she was breaking from the rest of the Royal Family, who clearly are at rift, so no one will do that.
“They know it would cause instant trouble.”
Princess Eugenie is known to have a close relationship with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, featuring in the couple’s Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan in California during a Californian visit in 2022.
Meghan and Harry have also reportedly purchased a holiday home at Portugal’s exclusive CostaTerra Golf and Ocean Club, just minutes away from a property Eugenie’s family owns.
Princess Eugenie and her husband, Jack Brooksbank, first established their connection to Portugal in 2022, with the couple and their two sons splitting their time between their London residence at Ivy Cottage and the European holiday destination.
The Sussexes have made their life in the United States since 2020, where they reside with their children, Prince Archie, five, and Princess Lilibet, three.
Fitzwilliams told GB News: “Will we see Archie and Lili meet with Eugenie and Jack’s children and so on? And how will that work out? We’ve yet to know.”
“The link with Eugenie is interesting, as she and Harry are quite close,” he added. “They’ve seen quite a bit of each other, so there are a lot of question marks there.
