Kate Middleton made a rare and candid revelation about the personal challenges she faced this year, marking her first major public appearance since announcing she had completed chemotherapy. The 42-year-old royal hosted her fourth annual Together at Christmas carol service at Westminster Abbey on December 6, sharing her reflections on a year that tested her strength and resolve.

Speaking to singer Paloma Faith, who performed at the event, Middleton reflected on the unpredictability of the year.

I didn’t know this year was going to be the year that I’ve just had,” she said.

Faith echoed her sentiment, calling it “the unplanned,” which Kate agreed with, nodding and replying, “The unplanned, exactly. But I think lots of people this year have had such challenging times, and many who are here today.”

Her words resonated deeply with attendees, as this year has been especially difficult for her family. Earlier in March, Princess Kate publicly shared that she was undergoing cancer treatment, a journey she described as “incredibly tough.”

Prince William, her husband, echoed these sentiments in November, calling it “probably the hardest year of my life.” Both Kate and King Charles faced cancer battles this year, adding to the emotional weight carried by the royal family.

With love and empathy as the guiding themes of this year’s carol service, Princess Kate invited 1,600 guests, including individuals who had gone the extra mile for their communities and those who had experienced difficult times.

A significant gesture of support was her invitation to survivors and families from Southport, a community that experienced a tragic attack on July 29.

The incident, which occurred at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class, resulted in the deaths of three children and injuries to 10 others, including eight children.

The Princess and Prince William previously made a surprise visit to Southport after the tragedy, meeting with the families of those affected and the dance teacher who witnessed the attack.

The carol service was also filled with emotional symbolism. Guests were given a heartwarming letter from Princess Kate about love as a source of light. The evening’s order of service featured an illustration by Charlie Mackesy of people walking towards Westminster Abbey with their arms interlinked.

The image was accompanied by the words, “How did I help?” and the response, “You were by my side. Which was everything.
