Makes me nauseous: Meghan Markle blasted over controversial poppy decision
Meghan Markle has sparked outrage after she wore a poppy which appeared slightly different to her husband Prince Harry’s.
The Duchess of Sussex appeared in a video alongside her husband Prince Harry last week, discussing children’s safety in the digital world.
Both the royals donned a poppy, although Meghan’s looked slightly different to the duke’s, as her’s did not seem to have leaves on the stalk.
This design bears similarity to Canadian poppies made in Toronto, which have four petals and no leaf, much like those worn in Scotland.
In a heated rant on GB News, journalist Lee Cohen said: “When I saw that, I immediately made a post on Twitter that actually went viral, expressing that it makes one nauseous to see Meghan Markle wearing the poppy commemorating the noble dead of the nation.
“She is so disrespectful, so disrespected, and apparently a lot of people agree. ”
This controversy follows a similar incident last year when the Duchess wore a poppy at an American Navy fitness centre opening in San Diego.
The decision sparked anger among US veterans, as poppies are traditionally worn in America during Memorial Day in May, not November.
In the United States, November 11 is celebrated as Veterans’ Day, with different customs than British Remembrance Day.
Harry and Meghan quit their roles as senior members of the Royal Family in January 2020, and moved across the pond to the US.
They have since not attended the annual Remembrance Day service at the Cenotaph, despite Harry having served in Afghanistan .
While Cohen noted it’s “conceivable he could still appear, just not in uniform,” he suggested that tensions with the Royal Family make such appearances “very unlikely.”
He explained: “It is really unlikely that Harry is going to be able to participate in these central events with the Royal Family going forward.
It’s a pity for him. Although he created his own path here, he stepped down in 2020.
“He gave up his honorary military titles and the right to wear a uniform.”
The Duke and Duchess now mark Remembrance Day in their own way from their American base, separate from official royal ceremonies.
