Prince William’s ‘only demand’ for Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle revealed
Prince William made one request before his younger brother Prince Harry married Meghan Markle in 2018, less than two years after they first began dating.
Although the rifts between the once-close brothers is believed to have started after the wedding, some believe it was actually the build-up to the big Windsor wedding when the cracks began to show.
According to one royal author, Prince William and other members of the Royal Family had concerns about the speed of the relationship, which led to William making one clear request.
In Catherine, The Princess Of Wales: The Biography, author Robert Jobson said that William reportedly asked the late Queen Elizabeth for assurance that Meghan would not be allowed to wear any of Princess Diana’s jewellery.
Jobson wrote: “By the time William was confirmed as best man, the relationship had worsened. I have been told that still concerned about the match, he’d sought assurances from the Queen that Harry’s bride would not be wearing any of Princess Diana’s jewellery, even though his own wife was allowed to wear it.”
The author added: “Despite sharp digs and thin skins on both sides, the wedding at Windsor in May 2018 was a spectacular success. In public, the Royal Family were all smiles, though privately they were at daggers drawn.”
Although Meghan did not wear any of Diana’s jewellery during the wedding ceremony, the Duchess of Sussex did wear Diana’s aquamarine cocktail ring to her evening reception along with her Stella McCartney halterneck dress.
Since the wedding, and before quitting as a member of the Royal Family in 2020, Meghan has also worn several of Diana’s pieces including a Cartier bracelet and butterfly earrings.
Princess Kate continues to wear jewellery belonging to the late princess.
Although the Queen granted William’s request, it seems that the prince and his younger brother were on rocky ground before the wedding, with this having escalated in the years since.
The brothers are currently no longer on speaking terms, which is believed to have been the case since the release of Harry’s memoir Spare in 2023.
Despite the rocky relationship between his sons, King Charles remains on speaking terms with Harry, 40, and remains close with William, 42.
