Maria Sharapova on Coco Gauff’s recent coaching change
Maria Sharapova recently gave her thoughts on Coco Gauff parting ways with Brad Gilbert after a year. The American endured a string of disappointing performances during the North American hard-court swing, losing in the third round of the Canadian Open, which was followed by a second-round elimination at the Cincinnati Open. Gauff had a disappointing title defense at the US Open, as she lost to Emma Navarro in the fourth round.
Shortly after this, the 20-year-old and Brad Gilbert parted ways. Speaking on this, Sharapova said that Gauff was aware that there would be changes in her team throughout the years.
“I think Coco Gauff has an amazing head on her shoulders and knows that there will be changes in her team throughout the years,” the Russian said.
“What you need at a certain point in your career is not what you need later in your career. I was very fortunate with the teams that I had. I still remain very close to all of my coaches.
They’re such big team members and they carry so much weight. A team is really important,” she added.
After retiring from tennis, Maria Sharapova got engaged to businessman Alexander Gilkes and she gave birth to the couple’s son Theodore in July 2022. The former World No. 1 has also attended a few tennis events in recent years, notably the past two editions of the US Open and this season’s Wimbledon Championships.
