Novak Djokovic shares interactions with fan who went viral for US Open t-shirt

Novak Djokovic has rewarded one of his most loyal supporters on the ATP circuit after the fan travelled to support him at the US Open. During his second round win over compatriot Laslo Djere, a man in the crowd was seen sporting a ‘World against No1e’ t-shirt.

His top had an image of the 24-time Grand Slam champion holding the world in his hands, which was picked up by television cameras.

The fan however, signified a familiar face, having already been seen cheering for the world No.3 at events all over the world.

In his post-match press conference, Djokovic was pressed on whether he knew the individual and recognised him from other tournaments. “I’ve seen him around,” he replied. “I mean, I don’t know him personally but I’m grateful for his support. That’s all I can say.

The 37-year-old was leading 6-4 6-4 2-0 when his opponent was forced to retire with injury. Despite clearing suffering afterwards having played in humid conditions, Djokovic revealed he ensured the fanatical fan was rewarded.

He seems to be coming by himself and is producing some interesting designs on his shirts,” he added. “So yeah, I signed a couple of his shirts and thanked him for his support
The t-shirt appears to refer to Djokovic being denied entry to the Australian Open and US Open in 2022 over his refusal to be vaccinated against Covid-19. Many Djokovic followers viewed the sanctions as the star being unfairly targeted by authorities.

The fan was one of a host of spectators at the Arthur Ashe Stadium to witness history. The victory saw Djokovic become the first player in history to win 90 matches at all four Grand Slam events.

That was despite struggling badly with his service game, sending down eight double fours and only getting in 47 per cent of his first serves. But he backed himself to make more history in New York, as he chases an unprecedented 25th Grand Slam title.

The matches will only get tougher from here on in, I know that but I’m fine,” he said, before issuing a warning to his rivals. “I will find my way as I have done many times in my career.”

Djokovic will now face 28th seed Alexei Popyrin of Australia in the third round. That clash is scheduled to take place on Friday, with the four-time US Open champion again expected to be given top billing on the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
