No marriage is perfect: Prince William’s ‘brutal two-word reaction after breaking up with Kate Middleton

The course of true love often doesn’t run smoothly – just ask the Prince and Princess of Wales.

Although they have now been married for more than 13 years and juggle their royal duties with bringing up their three children, things were once a lot rockier. And in fact, in the years before they became engaged, the pair, who had met at university famously split.

It came after they both graduated from university and William had begun life in the Army while Kate worked for a retail chain in London. But with engagement speculation reaching fever pitch and William not quite ready to settle down, the pair split in a heartbreaking 30-minute phone call.

And now in a new explosive royal book, it has been claimed that William celebrated the break-up with a boozy night on the town in London’s exclusive Mayfair – and was heard shouting a brutal two-word response. In the book Catherine, The Princess of Wales: The Biography, which is being serialised in the Daily Mail, author Robert Jobson writes that William was heard shouting “I’m free!” He says: “He celebrated their break-up with an alcohol-fuelled night at the Mahiki nightclub in Mayfair with his close pals. ‘I’m free!’ he shouted as he slipped into a drunken version of the robot dance. He then told his friends that they should all ‘drink the menu’, which they more or less ended up doing.”

Despite her initial heartbreak, Kate also followed William’s lead and spent many nights out on the town with her sister Pippa in a series of daring outfits.

And Mr Jobson writes that William soon went back to military life and was holed up in army barracks, while Kate continued her single life, wearing more daring outfits than ever and even attracting the attention of shipping heir, Sir Henry Ropner – leaving William with doubts about the split and wanting to woo her back.

Thankfully, the pair were brought back together at a mutual friend’s ‘Freakin Naughty’ themed fancy dress party, where Kate dressed as a sexy nurse, and they soon rekindled things. And just several years later, William had proposed and the pair tied the knot.

The couple have spoken about their split in the past, with Kate admitting in their engagement interview: “At the time, I wasn’t very happy about it, but it made me a stronger person. You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn’t realised. I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you’re younger. I really valued that time for me as well, although I didn’t think it at the time.”

While William said: “We were both very young… we were both finding ourselves and being different characters. It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up, so it was just a bit of space and it worked out for the better.”
