Yesterday was a golden day in the history of Spanish sport. The country saw successes on the tennis court and the soccer field on the same day as its happiness knew no bounds. Earlier in the day, Carlos Alcaraz defeated Novak Djokovic to win his second successive Wimbledon title. It was a dominant performance from the Spanish sensation, outplaying one of the greatest players of all time in straight sets. Subsequently, Spain’s men’s soccer team won the 2024 European Championships after getting the better of England in the summit clash. These two big wins were celebrated by every Spaniard, including Rafael Nadal.
After missing the Wimbledon Championships due to injury, Nadal is making a comeback at the Swedish Open. Along with his singles commitment, the Spaniard is also playing doubles alongside Casper Ruud as he prepares for the Paris Olympic Games. After winning the opening round match, Nadal celebrated the sweet success of the twin wins of his country yesterday.
While celebrating those victories, Nadal took a cheeky jibe at Ruud and said, “I think the Spanish team played amazing from the first day of the Euros to the last. The whole country is very proud. A very happy day yesterday too with Carlos winning Wimbledon. It was an amazing day for Spanish sport. Sport generates motivation & passion for people. That’s good for the country without a doubt. Hope to see Norway in the next important competitions.”
While making that comment about Ruud’s country, Nadal cheekily looked over at his doubles partner, who had a wry smile at the Spaniard’s statement. Interestingly, Norway missed out on a spot at the European Championships after failing to qualify. This was mocked by Nadal while celebrating Spain’s success. Despite Nadal taking a jibe at Ruud, the two displayed great partnership in their dominant opening-round victory. Similarly, Alcaraz was equally dominant in his win over Djokovic. After winning his fourth major title, he left his idol, Rafael Nadal, behind in a unique record.
Carlos Alcaraz making huge waves at 21!
Yesterday’s Wimbledon victory was Alcaraz’s fourth Grand Slam title, having previously won French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open titles. With this, he became the third youngest player to win 4 major titles. Alcaraz also left behind the likes of Rafael Nadal, Boris Becker, and Jim Courier to achieve this monumental feat at such a young age.
Further, Alcaraz’s victory over Djokovic invited special praise from Nadal, who has been very impressed with his compatriot’s talent. Nadal took to social media and said, “Congratulations Carlos,” along with Spain’s flag and 4 trophy emojis to denote Alcaraz’s 4 Grand Slam titles. Further, he also added, “What a great moment, another one… Big Hug!!!!”
Alcaraz would be elated to have received this special message from a player who he followed closely while growing up. The duo will be seen in action together at the upcoming Paris Olympic Games. If all goes well and the two remain fit, Alcaraz and Nadal might also team up to play doubles for their country in Paris. It’ll be interesting to watch the two generational stars play together on the tennis court.
